TAGGED: OPEN | WORD COUNT: 588 | WINTER 2014- MORNING

The morning was silent. The sun seeped in through the paned glass painted a pattern across the room. In the light, the dust particles danced around like so many tiny snowflakes. A creek of a chair broke the silence of the room. Blair Turner leaned back against the spine of the chair and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. She liked to start her days early. Here, in the meeting room of the courthouse they’d made into a school, Blair sat in relative silence.

A small lamp sat at the edge of her desk illuminating the piles of papers in front of her. A cup of hot water and honey sat on the other end of the desk. As she took another ginger sip from the mug, she wished (and not for the first time) that it was tea or coffee. When this baby was born she was going to drink as much caffeine as she could get her hands on. She’d all but lost her dependence on caffeine in the three years after the fall and before she came to Alexandria. She and Sam however, drank their weight in coffee in the first week they moved to the settlement. And now here she was, a year later, wishing she could wake up faster.

In her heart she knew the baby would be fine, but she didn’t want to risk it, not when rushing to hospital was out of the question. It scared the crap out of her knowing that she would have to deliver naturally, and likely without drugs. She also knew, one or both of them could die. Blair rested a hand on the top curve of her belly and took up her pencil with the other.

Class for the kids would start in about an hour and she wanted to make sure that she had all of her ducks in a row, so to speak. First half of the day was going to be math for the little ones. Later on around lunch she was teaching grammar to the teens. Tonight, if enough people showed up, she was going to host the first meeting of her book club. It was a rag tag sort of thing, this book club. Their selections were limited but she did manage to find several copies of The Great Gatsby in the town library. After putting the word out and getting a somewhat favorable response, Blair decided to green light the event and see where it went. If only for the reason of eating some of Carol’s cookies, Blair was excited.

When she finished marking up the last of the times tables, Blair put down the pen and picked up her copy of the Great Gatsby. She opened to where she had dog eared and started to read. The town was waking up outside the window. She saw Rick and Michonne walk beside each other towards the center of town, likely to talk to Deanna. She saw several other townsfolk, braced with their AKs headed for the wall for guard duty, steaming thermos’ of coffee in their hands.

Blair turned the page and sniffed, using her finger to wipe at her nose. She heard the front door of the courthouse open and listened as the footsteps moved closer and closer to her door. She dog eared again as she looked up. She smiled as the door opened. “Morning friend. ” She stretched her arms over her head in an attempt to wake herself up.

Through it all we still remain
Till ashes, ashes, we fade away
Maggie woke to the sound of a crying child, her eyes flew open amd she shot straight up in bed, looking around blearily for her son. It took a few seconds to recognized that Mason wasn't in his crib in the room. His cries came from outside the bedroom, down the hall or possibly downstairs. It was only after this realization that she heard Glenn's voice, softly cooing at the child, and she relaxed. He must have gotten up early with Mason. She flopped back onto the bed, sagging with relief, the adrenaline and panic practically oozing from her pores. Normally, waking to his cries wouldn't frighten her quite so much, but she'd been having the dream again. It was a terrible nightmare, one where Glenn was dead and her baby was taken away. It was pretty much the worst thing she could imagine, and while she felt safe here in Alexandria, felt confident of their groups ability to take care of themselves and protect the community, it was still what lurked at the back of her mind waiting for a moment of weakness.

She let herself lay there for five minutes that felt more like an hour, just listening as Glenn shushed baby Mason, changing him or giving him a bottle or maybe just distracting him from whatever had displeased his little baby brain. A soft smile drew across her lips as she took it all in, letting it soothe away the fear from the nightmare. When her five minutes was up, she rose and dressed for the day, taking more care with her clothes than she had in years. Until they came to Alexandria, fashion in the apocolypse had been entirely a process of 'what has the least walker guts'. Now, she had the freedom to pick and choose among a few selections and the drive to look smart as she went to work. Not that she dressed up. She aettled on a clean black tank top, jeans, and a big baggie sweater the pattern for which might have been intended for a large fisherman. She didn't care, she was cozy and if there were call to arm up with in the walls, she could hide a handgun quite neatly at the back of her waistband.

Maggie slipped down the stairs sock footed, letting herself slide across the wood floors for a beat. She pulled on boots - thick soled combat boots - and went to check in on her men. Glenn gave her the 'shh it's asleep' sign, and she crept over to place a kiss on the forehead of both. Then she mouthed the word work before creeping just as carefully away and out the door. Glenn would bring her by later, when he left for his job, and she would take over from there. Some days they took Mason to the day care, but more often than not Maggie kept him with her at work when she would be indoors for the day. With the daycare on her mind, Maggie decided to stop and see how Blair was doing. The woman taufht in the school portion of the daycare, and Maggie had gotten to know her little by little when she dropped in to drop off or pick up Mason. She liked Blair and was happy they were slowly becoming friends.

She popped inside the courthouse doors with a loud and dramatic "Brrrr!" in case Blair was unaware that it was winter in Virginia and freaking cold. Some of the northerners thought she was overly sensitive to the cold, but Maggie didn't care. Cold was cold, and it sure as hellfire wasn't warm out there. "Morning!" she returned her friends sentiment brightly, dropping into the seat across from her. "Continuing to defy the logic of 'the world ended, i can sleep in til 8' I see." Maggie smiled, showing she was teasing, though she honestly didn't see how the woman got up so early in winter. "How's Gatsby this morning?" she nodded her chin at the book. Maggie was trying to make her way through it in her free time, but English had never been her favorite class.

TAGGED: Maggie | WORD COUNT: 466 | WINTER 2014- MORNING

Blair was grateful but not at all surprised that Maggie walk through the door. To say that seeing anyone in town was a surprise was a little preposterous, especially considering that they didn't get passers through on the regular. Besides that, Blair often saw Maggie as they'd been getting closer. The proximity of the nursery and the school room certainly helped. Compounded by the fact that Maggie recently gave birth to Mason, made for a promising friendship between the two. They'd had several talks over the last several months about what Blair could expect during her pregnancy, both the good and the bad. Now that Sam was dead, it was nice to know that she wasn't going to go through this alone. At the very least she had Maggie and Glenn right?

She smiled at Maggie's jab. Blair knew full well that she had the luxury of sleeping until whenever she wanted but she simply couldn't. As pregnant as she was, it was getting difficult to sleep through the night because she could never find a comfortable spot;. That and the fact that she couldn't remember the last time she'd slept in a bed alone before Sam died. Sleep was not the escape for her like it was for others. She was perfectly content getting out of bed with the sun and making sure her day was in order before everyone else showed up.

"You know how it is girl, I can't sleep worth a damn." She smiled sheepishly as she rested a hand on the top of her belly and dropped her back against the chair, doing her best to get comfortable. She eyed the book that Maggie indicated. "He's as good as ever, has me wishing I could go to one of his infamous parties." As the book centered around a man who threw giant, lavish parties it was no wonder Blair pinned so fully. Reading provided an escape from the shitty reality they lived in, it was why she was so anxious to start the club.

"What about you? Have you been reading? I hope you show up tonight. There's going to be cookies." She squealed at the very thought, trying to be happy about anything these days. Fake it until you feel it Blair, even if your depression is soul crushing these days. The club was tonight, and the day was only starting. "So what's on tap for Mags? Finding a fluffy coat I hope?" She wrinkled her nose in a smile. Blair didn't mind the cold as much as the Southerner but that didn't mean that was adverse to coats, scarfs and gloves. Blair reached for her cup of lemon water and took a sip, brushing some hair from her face in the process.

Through it all we still remain
Till ashes, ashes, we fade away
Maggie leaned forward in her seat, resting her elbows on Blair’s desk and grinning. ”Tell me about it. There was a whole month where I thought Mason would pop out in soccer cleats.” She half snorted a laugh, recalling how ridiculous and odd it had felt. It would have been funny if it hadn’t been for the fact that the thing he was kicking was her bladder. ”He set up camp over my bladder and anytime he felt I’d slept too long, he’d start kicking.” She rolled her eyes. Every two hours she’d had to pee, it seemed. Ah, the beauty and grace of pregnancy. How joyous it had been to bring a life into the world. Joyous and painful with a hint of torment. ”Well, if he steps from the pages and invites you to one, take a rain check. Champagnes bad for baby.” She laughed a bit more, shifting to lean back in her chair comfortably.

She grimaced ”Oh, I’ve been reading. I haven’t been reading fast enough, but I’ve been reading.” Maggie’s shoulder came up, a small shrug of apology, though who she apologized to she wasn’t sure. It wasn’t as if Blair was her English teacher. ”I’ve got about four chapters left and no time to finish it today, but I’ll be there anyway. Can’t resist the cookies.” Which was the terrible truth. She’d have sat through Eugene telling one of his more boring stories is bribed with cookies. Especially if they were chocolate chip. She was about to say as much when she noticed, just for a moment, Blair’s pleasant smile falter. It was back in a flash, but Maggie knew that the other woman was hurting. She hadn’t gotten al of the gory details, she didn’t really need them to understand that Blair’s husband was dead and she was in pain. She missed him. Maggie wished there was something she could do, something she could say, but in Blair’s place she knew there was nothing that anyone could say to make the loss of Glenn even remotely okay. A little, selfish part of her was glad that it wasn’t her feeling this pain.

So she did the only thing she could think of and carried on the conversation as if nothing had happened. If Blair needed to talk, she hoped she’d come to her, but she wasn’t going to push. She tilted her head pensively, thinking. ”Hm…” Maggie recalled what Deanna had said the day before about their plans for today. ”Boring stuff. Paperwork, planning, lot’s of math. Last summer Reg drew up these schematics, plans to expand the wall again to get more land within the walls for farming. I’ve been playing secretary helping them sort out what we’d need to make it happen.” The plan was one of a few things Deanna had in the works, and it was by far Maggie’s favorite. She knew about farming and ranching, she knew that having that land for crops would be one step closer to making Alexandria truly self sustaining. ”How about you?”

TAGGED: Maggie | WORD COUNT: 438 | WINTER 2014- MORNING

A wide smile found its way to Blair’s cheeks. She was beaming. It was nice being able to live in a place where could afford to smile and laugh on a regular basis, nice to have friends she could dish with. This was as close to normal as Blair figured it would get for them in this world. “I definitely know that feeling. If the idea of a catheter wasn’t so terrible, id be content not getting up twenty-times a day. Starting to think Depends aren’t a horrible idea. I could get some diaper practice at least. “ She guffawed, holding herself under the round of her belly for support. Ironically in that moment, she peed if only a little bit. As much as she enjoyed growing a life, she welcomed the day when the baby was born, because this was getting old quick. “In that case, I’m sure Gatsby could spring for some sparkling grape juice. Poor it into a flute and you’ve got virgin champagne. I used to drink those all the time as a kid for New Years.”

Blair waved her hand in dismissal. “I don’t figure many of finished reading and to be honest in the end it’s more about cookies and quality time together” She smiled sweetly. If she wasn’t so inclined to reading and she hadn’t already read the book close to a dozen times, she might be in Maggie’s boat. In no way would Blair take slight to anyone that didn’t finish the book before tonight. Book club was about escaping from the horrors that surrounded them on the daily, it wasn’t a race to finish a book. Expansions on the wall eh? Her ears quirked like she was a dog listening to a sonar pitch. “I thought I’d heard mention of that. Anything I can do to help? Please say yes.” Honestly she’d felt like dead weight (little pun intended) lately.

“As far as the rest of the day goes, I have another batch of cookies to make after I finish up the lessons and then I was just going to hang around until book club started. Nothing exciting” Case in point. Because she was pregnant she was limited in what she could do lest she injure the baby. These days, even with qualified medical professionals, it was hard to keep the care needed. At some point in the not so distant future, there would be no more pre-fall educated doctors or nurses. Thoughts like this kept Blair up at night, as if she needed another reason to evade sleep these days.

Through it all we still remain
Till ashes, ashes, we fade away
Maggie laughed along with Blair, recalling the temptation to locate her own adult diapers toward the end. She’d hung in there and had baby Mason before giving in to the temptation and asking Glenn to look for some while he was out. She laughed again, though less raucously, as Blair mentioned that sparkling juice would make a good substitute for champagne. ”True enough.” The suggestion made her wonder, though, if they even had sparkling juices in the roaring 20’s. Had they been invented yet?

She felt a sense of relief as Blair explained she didn’t expect many people to have finished the book. She’d been feeling like the naughty student who didn’t finish her homework, finding out book club was going to be more of a social gathering than anything else was a weight off her mind. ”Cookies? Now you’re talking my language. Chocolate chip?” She asked, voice hopeful. She really missed cookies.

”Oh, I don’t know, maybe…” Maggie hedged, trying to think of something Blair could help with that wouldn’t cause undue stress and send her into premature labor. She recalled all too well the frustration of being the bloated elephant in the room who everyone treated like porcelain. There was some paperwork that they might be able to shuffle her way, but Maggie thought she’d better run it by Deanna first. ”I’ll talk to Deanna and see if she can come up with anything.” she offered, finally.
